Literature

There is an unending number of websites of interest to the literati, so we're sure that some obvious sites have been left out of our faves. We have also tended to choose free sites over paid sites when the difference in quality or resources seemed equal. Left off your fave? Tell us about it.

General

Voice of the Shuttle: Created by Alan Liu of UC-Santa Barbara, the Voice of the Shuttle is a truly comprehensive site of everything literary from classical and Biblical literature to twentieth century literature, theatre and drama, literary theory, women's literature, ethnicities and nationalities. Now database driven -- and infinitely searchable -- it is the perfect starting place for any enquiry. It is a must site for any student.

Amazon: Hard to leave Amazon.com off any discussion of literature on the web. Its mass inventory of new and used books would clearly qualify it on any list, but now with Kindle: Amazon's New Wireless Reading Device featuring almost 1,000,000 books, one simply can't ignore Amazon.

Bartleby: Named after the humble character of its namesake scrivener, Bartleby publishes the classics of literature, nonfiction, and reference free of charge for the home, classroom, and desktop of each and every Internet participant. Batleby.com is without peers on the web, and should be on everyone's fave list.

Project Gutenberg: A volunteer effort to digitize, archive, and distribute cultural works. Most of the items in its collection are the full texts of public domain books. The project tries to make these as free as possible, in long-lasting, open formats that can be used on almost any computer. Currently, it contains more than 20,000 ebooks easily accessed through simple to use directories.

Digital Book Index: Provides links to more than 140,000 full-text digital books from more than 1800 publishers, universities, and various private sites. More than 100,000 of these books, texts, and documents are free while many others are available at very modest cost.

The Online Books Page: Facilitates access to books that are freely readable online. Created by John Mark Ockerbloom and hosted by the University of Pennsylvania, the site currently contains more than 30,000 easily searchable titles.

Google Book Search: Book Search works just like web search. Enter a search term and it will match you with a relevant book. If the book is in the public domain you can download a free pdf. If not you can buy, or borrow, the book from the library.

Representative Poetry Online: Based on Representative Poetry, this online version includes more than 3,000 poems from 500 poets from the Old English period, to the works of living poets today.
